The Lively Life of Connie McHargue

If you ever hear a burst of laughter echoing down the hall at Dominion of Richmond or spot someone aiming for a strike on bowling day, chances are you’ve just found Connie McHargue. Born in Corbin, Kentucky, Connie grew up in a home fueled by her parents’ hard work—her mother guiding young minds as a schoolteacher, her father working long hours on the railroad. She and her sisters, Charlyn and Carolyn, filled their childhood with dreams and laughter. Connie’s biggest dream? Marrying a truck driver, so she could see the world from the passenger seat.
Life had other adventures in store. After high school, Connie became an operator at the telephone company, where she was just as quick with a joke as she was with a call. She spent her free time on the company’s baseball team, never one to sit still for long. A new opportunity led her to bookkeeping at a furniture store, where her knack for numbers shone through.
When her children were grown and her life took a new turn, Connie decided it was finally time to chase those childhood dreams of travel. She joined a travel company in Tennessee and set off to explore—from the Carolinas to Texas to Colorado and beyond, Connie gathered stories and memories everywhere she went.
In 2010, a new chapter began when she met Murl, a retired veteran with a kind heart. They fell in love, married a year later, and built a life together. Connie’s family grew to include two beloved grandsons and a shih tzu puppy named Sofia, who never fails to make her smile.
Since joining Dominion Senior Living Center of Richmond in March 2022, Connie has brought her lively spirit to every corner of our community. She’s a regular at bingo, always up for a card game or a sweet treat when there’s one to be had. Shopping trips and chats with friends are among her favorite pastimes, but if you really want to see her light up, hand her a bowling ball—Connie’s competitive streak is legendary.
More than anything, Connie’s warmth and zest for life brighten our days. She reminds us that it’s never too late to start a new adventure or to find joy in the simple moments. We’re grateful for every laugh, every story, and every game shared with Connie—and we look forward to many more.
