Dominion Diaries: Deanna Sergel

Deanna Sergel: A Life of Learning, Love,

and Laughter

If you hear laughter drifting from a lively conversation at Dominion of Richmond or spot a calendar packed with new plans, you can bet Deanna Sergel is nearby. Born in the rolling hills of Scott County, Virginia, Deanna’s childhood was a beautiful tangle of noise and affection as the second oldest of eight siblings. There were never enough chairs at the table, but there was always enough love to go around.

Midway through high school, Deanna’s family made a big move south—relocating to Florida in hopes that the warm climate would offer her father some relief and a better quality of life as he faced illness. The family’s hope for healing and comfort was clear in every mile they traveled.

Florida turned out to be a place of new beginnings for Deanna. She thrived in her studies and, with characteristic humor, was even crowned the Watermelon Queen of Florida. Her journey through higher education took her to three different cities—Lakeland, Tallahassee, and Gainesville—where she attended college and immersed herself in the world of English and Education.

Armed with her degree and a sense of adventure, Deanna set off for Texas to start her career in education. Missouri later became home, where she and her first husband taught English together at Northwest Missouri State. When that chapter closed, life surprised her with Dave, a kindred spirit she met at an Assessment Conference. Their partnership has been one of mutual respect, laughter, and unwavering support.

Deanna’s professional path led her to Berea, where she poured her passion for learning into her role as coordinator for the Center of Teaching, Learning, and Research. Her career paused when family called—she moved in to care for her mother, giving back the same nurturing she’d received all her life. After her mother’s passing, Deanna returned to Berea, picking up her work and moving forward with resilience.

Family is at the center of Deanna’s world. Her daughter writes and performs original plays, captivating audiences with both story and song. Her son is a professional drummer, keeping time for fellow musicians that fill venues with music. Four grandchildren add boundless joy to her life, and at home, she shares her heart with two loyal pit bulls, Ruby and Blu.

Since joining Dominion Senior Living of Richmond in July 2022, Deanna’s days have been full—she finds comfort in pet therapy, delight in doll therapy, and makes a daily ritual of sharing a meal at Golden Corral with Dave. She brings warmth, wit, and a spark of creativity wherever she goes.

Deanna reminds us that a wonderful life isn’t measured in titles or accolades, but in the love you give, the people you support, and the laughter you share. We’re grateful she’s chosen to share this chapter of her story with us, and we look forward to many more memories together.
